streaming services are evil (semi rant)

2026.01.22

subscription based music streaming services are the most evil invention impacting the music industry to date. subscription based music streaming services provide everybody who's willing to spend some money a month with a virtually infinite number of music.

music being easily accessible is in no way a bad thing. on the contrary, it gives people an easy emotional outlet and allows anybody to freely discover new music and develop creatively. while recent trends have shown a drop of artistic value in music, with labels essentially forcing artists to write soulless slop fit for short form content, i don't believe this is inherently bad either. not everybody wants music to consume most of their life and that's okay. this music often fits the general public better than artistically intricate work as it is easy to get into and written to be catchy.

the true evil of music streaming services lies in their scummy business practices, not paying artists fairly and allowing ai generated slop.

while some services are better than others, generally most of them aren't worth supporting and should only be used if one cannot afford music otherwise (no shame in that). people who can afford to buy music however, should get physical or digital copies whenever possible to give artists the support.

streaming sucks, buy music on bandcamp instead whenever you can afford to. awesome platform, the first one to ban ai generated music!!!!!!!!
